A cruising implies that each one knows the elementary rules of
navigation, just to have more fun. The crew will be informed by the skipper before
setting the sails, on:
Beginning
Where, what, how
The skipper will show you the water tanks, life jackets, safety
harnesses, life lines, fire extinguishers, emergency flares, survival raft, valves, bilge
pumps, tools.., and how to use them.
Transmitter-receiver VHF is engaged on channel 16, the security
channel
Every day the navigation program is
prepared, depending on the meteo
Beginning
How to avoid collision
(this is not a pirate story!):
The skipper will remind the crew of safety and navigation light
rules
Beginning
During cruising:
1) It is not authorized to climb on the boom or the mast without
the presence of the skipper.
2) The boom can be dangerous (" boumm! "), abstain
from involuntary jibing, lower your heads!
3) Safety harness (and life jacket) are worn::
- at day, when reefing, or according to the skippers
directives
- at night, on displacement on the boat, at the mast, or according to the skippers
directives..
4) The dinghy is prohibited by strong wind (imagine you end up
somewhere in Japan?!)
5) When using the dinghy, inform the skipper: where you plan to go,
and for how long. If you don't, the skipper is stressed (where the hell did you
disappear?).
6) A crew member has an eye upon swimmers and snorklers....there are
not only sharks.... but also the abuse of good things...)
Beginning
In the event of a man over board
The first one who realizes the loss of a crew-member shouts " Man
over board ! ", throws the buoy and does not leave the man
out of sight (binoculars). IMMEDIATELY and WITHOUT command of the skipper, the
engine is started. The operation of rescue is directed by the skipper. (GPS: to press
on the key touches MOB)
Beginning
Night
navigation:
The watch is done with two crew-members: the coxswain and the
navigator. A third team-member is ready to help them in the event of need. One is
requested not to leave his station before the arrival of the next watch. Please, wake up
the next crew gently..., 5 minutes before the hour, and, why not some water ready for a
cup of coffee or a soup....
You wake up the skipper (she takes a nap...., she does not
sleep) in case of::
- Change in wind direction, or wind increasing at 20 knots
- Visibility less than 1 mile
- Non- identified light
- Injuries, sickness. Engine, electrical or technical problem.
- As soon as you become entangled, or doubtful about any navigation problem.
